Facebook Adds Ability to Create and Share 3D Photos
October 15, 2018 / Matt Southern
Facebook has introduced the ability to share 3D photos that can be viewed by anyone with the mobile app. Users can also view 3D photos in VR on the Oculus Go and Oculus Rift. Capturing 3D photos is limited to users with a dual-lens camera on their smartphone. The technology works by capturing the distance between the subject in the foreground and background, which is why a dual-lens camera is necessary. Users first have to take a photo in portrait mode on their device. Then they can share the photo in the Facebook app by selecting the “3D Photo” option. When viewing the photo users can scroll, pan, and tilt their phone to see the photo in 3D. Facebook describes it as being similar to looking through a window.
