Defining the GDPR Impact on Digital Advertising

The General Data Protection Regulation or GDPR is the overall regulation on the protection and handling of personal data for the European Union coming into force from May 25, 2018. No one working in digital marketing – or indeed any business that deals with personal data doubt the importance of the GDPR. It brings changes to existing data protection law and is designed to strengthen rights and empower individuals by giving them more control over their personal data. Things such as clear consent and data protection principles are given greater emphasis. These changes to data usage could potentially have a huge impact on businesses and the way they handle their customer data. If you’re an advertiser, publisher or other Rakuten Marketing partner dealing with customer data, it’s very important for you to have a robust compliance regime in place. If businesses aren’t compliant by May 25, 2018, the consequences could be drastic: warnings of fines of up to 4% of annual global turnover, or 20,000,000 EUR have been clearly laid out. It may sound simple but one of the first steps to GDPR compliance is understanding whether the new EU regulations apply to your business. If you’re not in the EU, it could be easy to assume that the GDPR won’t affect you, when in reality this is far from the case

Why Your Marketplace Needs an Ad Program

whitePaper | May 17, 2021

Ghost Bidding for Causal Advertising Measurement

whitePaper | August 10, 2022

It’s critical for marketers to know if their campaigns are influencing behavior in response to an ad. But to really know if a campaign actually works, consumer response must be compared with those who hadn’t been exposed to the ad. This new study demonstrates the dramatic power of “ghost bidding” in revealing true campaign effectiveness. A large U.S.-based apparel company ran an extended ad campaign to a targeted audience. The difference? The company used demand-side platform technology to simultaneously expose and exclude identical user groups from viewing the ad. This A/B study used “ghost bidding”—withdrawing bids from the excluded group at the last moment—to plot the true effectiveness of display, video and audio ads, and demonstrated a powerful validation of marketing effectiveness.

Display Advertising: The Billboards of the Web

whitePaper | December 29, 2019

Display advertising is an online form of advertising similar to billboards, television ads and print ads. The ad has a simple concept and instantly provides the viewer with upfront information about the product or service. A display ad is embedded into a web page and consists of images and text. It can include sounds, animation or video to attract more attention, or with the help of some programming, can be highly interactive. HTML code is used to instruct a web server to load the specified website when the display ad is clicked on. Revenue for display advertising is usually earned on a cost per click (CPC) basis.
