Google purges 600 Android apps for “disruptive” pop-up ads

Article | February 24, 2020

You know those ads that obscure your whole screen when you’re trying to make a phone call, unlock your device or use your phone’s GPS? Technically, they’re called disruptive or out-of-app ads, and they maddeningly pop up outside of the app that hosts them, sometimes causing users to mistakenly click them, thereby frustrating users and wasting advertisers’ money. On Thursday, Google kicked nearly 600 of the offending apps off its Play store and banned them from its ad monetization platforms, Google AdMob and Google Ad Manager, for violating its disruptive ads policy and disallowed interstitial policy. Disruptive ads are those that come at you in unexpected ways, including by getting in the way of a device’s functions. While they do occur in-app, Google has recently seen a rise in what it calls “out-of-context ads” – those created by malicious developers who program them to pop up when the user isn’t actually active in their app.

Google’s and Facebook’s Grip on Digital Advertising Markets

Article | February 11, 2020

Since July 2019, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority has been conducting an extensive investigation of the digital advertising market. Estimates point out that digital ads now account for 51 percent of the almost $600 billion spent globally on advertising, a percentage that should only rise with time.

Taxing Internet Ads Could Raise Lots of Money, but Doubts Persist

Article | February 25, 2020

Leading Maryland lawmakers seeking a way to help pay for a $4 billion, 10-year education plan came up with what they consider an innovative idea of where to get the cash: deep-pocketed internet companies. The Democratic proposal would tax Facebook and Google for every ad the companies run on the computer screens of Maryland residents visiting their sites. If passed, the plan would make the Old Line State the first in the nation to raise revenue by taxing online advertising. “Massive technology corporations have ballooned in size and influence over the last two decades,” wrote Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson, a Democrat, in an email to Stateline. “This legislation starts to make sure that these corporations pay their fair share in contributing to building our state's core educational institutions.”
