Geo targeting is the most under-utilised targeting element available to marketers today, giving a huge opportunity to brands that invest time and money in smarter geo targeting. Most advertising platforms now allow for detailed geo targeting – often down to a zip code/postcode or even to GPS coordinates. Yet it is amazing how few advertisers are consciously investing effort in this area. Audience targeting/ retargeting (via cookies) has dominated online display advertising and is now under threat from legislation and the end of third party cookies. Targeting in search and demographic targeting in logged in social networks attract huge spends. With the end of cookies it has been contextual targeting getting the most attention. This has relegated geo targeting down the list in terms of investment and understanding. This is a mistake as in fact it has many benefits, and to succeed advertisers need to understand how it impacts their business.
With each passing day, the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak is having a growing impact on the global economy. While some businesses are lucky enough to be getting a huge surge in sales, many are struggling to bring in revenue or must adhere to shelter-in-place orders requiring them to shut down production. In these situations, your first instinct will be to preserve all cash flow and stop all unnecessary spending. But is digital advertising unnecessary spend? I would argue it’s very necessary, even if at a reduced budget. Ecommerce in the sense of selling any service or product online is critical right now for our entire economy. And with more than 66% of the U.S. population under stay-at-home orders, according to CNN, there are a lot of people sitting at home ready to buy. It might not be at the same volume that brands are accustomed to, but there is still plenty of opportunity, even if your production has stopped.
As an alternative to setting up Google Ads conversion tracking, you can import conversions from Google Analytics, such as goals or transactions, and then use it for optimization of your Google Ads campaigns. It is not a new feature, and its use by advertisers is a common practice. It became even more popular recently, as the Smart Shopping campaigns require conversion tracking with transaction-specific values. The import of Google Analytics transactions is probably the easiest way to comply with this requirement if there is no Google Ads conversion value tracking in place.
For the past couple of years, investors have been urging direct-to-consumer brands to rely less on digital advertising to acquire new customers. Now, it’s become even more important for them to be more efficient with their advertising spend with the coronavirus pandemic. some cuts. Many direct-to-consumer advertising brands are pulling back on their advertising spend on Facebook and Google as they anticipate shoppers will tighten their wallets in the coming months. Joe Yakuel, founder and CEO of performance marketing agency Within, which has worked with Nike and Spanx among other brands, estimated that among his clients overall, their ad spend was down a little more than a third at the beginning of last week, compared to two weeks ago. Within also launched a COVID-19 ad spend tracker, which shows that among a sampling of the agency’s fashion and luxury clients, Facebook ad spend was down roughly 27% and 36% month-over-month respectively.
