The Decline of Newspaper Advertising Continues

The Newspaper Association of America published its quarterly advertising report this week and the results are not good. Whoever hoped that Newspaper advertising had already hit rock bottom was disappointed. In the second quarter, advertising revenues of American newspapers declined another 6 percent to $5.7 billion.

Bespoke brands are rushing to build and promote virtual fitting tools

With the vast majority of Americans quarantined and events canceled, it would seem a fashion category that would be hit hard is bespoke suits. But according to several founders, suit fittings are still happening, they’ve just moved online. Colin Hunter, co-founder of bespoke suit brand Alton Lane, said his team has spent the past 10 days rapidly building and perfecting the infrastructure needed to get virtual fittings off the ground, to replace in-person fittings. The process has been informal and fast-moving, and fittings are now being conducted with customers over FaceTime, Google Hangouts and text. It’s Hunter hope that the virtual fittings, which kicked off last week, will be enough to see the brand through this rough period.

Taxing Internet Ads Could Raise Lots of Money, but Doubts Persist

Leading Maryland lawmakers seeking a way to help pay for a $4 billion, 10-year education plan came up with what they consider an innovative idea of where to get the cash: deep-pocketed internet companies. The Democratic proposal would tax Facebook and Google for every ad the companies run on the computer screens of Maryland residents visiting their sites. If passed, the plan would make the Old Line State the first in the nation to raise revenue by taxing online advertising. “Massive technology corporations have ballooned in size and influence over the last two decades,” wrote Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson, a Democrat, in an email to Stateline. “This legislation starts to make sure that these corporations pay their fair share in contributing to building our state's core educational institutions.”
